Thanksgiving Basket Brigade

On Saturday we participated in our ward's annual Thanksgiving Basket Brigade Service Project. This is one of our favorite activities of the year. We helped put together over 100 baskets of food for needy families in our community.

Each kit contained:
  • 1 10-12lb Turkey
  • 2 boxes Macaroni and Cheese
  • 2 14.5oz cans Green Beans
  • 2 15oz cans Corn
  • 2 boxes Stuffing
  • 1 box Cake Mix
  • 1lb box of Stick Butter
  • 1 10oz package of Marshmallows
  • 1 16oz can of Cranberry Sauce
  • 1 29oz can Pumpkin Pie Filling
  • 1 wrapped Pie Crust (not a graham cracker crust)
  • 1 Turkey Baking Pan
  • 1 40oz can Sweet Potatoes or 1 bag Fresh Sweet Potatoes (6 per bag)
  • 1 NEW Rectangular Laundry Basket
The setup was simple, everyone brought their donated items to the church at 8:30 am and placed them on assembly line tables in designated locations. Then at 9am the basket filling began.
The actual assembly went quick, it didn't take more than about 20 minute to fill all 100+ baskets.
Then the baskets were divided up among drivers who loaded them up and delivered them to needy families in our community. The families were selected based on names given to us by local schools.
The Lamar family had the privilege of delivering baskets to four separate families. It is so rewarding to participate in a service project and to see first hand how our efforts bless the lives of others. As we stopped by each home we got to see happiness and gratitude in the eyes of the receivers. In some cases we got to meet the children of the family and it felt good knowing that they now would have a nice meal to enjoy this Thanksgiving.
